WEIGHING 101: WHAT IS TARE

Do you want to know more about the functions of your digital weighing equipment? Find out exactly what tare is, through our definition and examples. Already on the Balanças Marques blog.

Digital weighing equipment can do much more than meets the eye. And, if you use one in your business daily, it’s important that you know all its features to make the most of its potential and facilitate all the logistics and management work.

That's why we explain what tare is – a feature of your digital scale that can increase weighing speed and productivity in your business.

What is the tare, after all?
According to the dictionary, in weighing context, tare refers to the “weight of an empty container or package, without the product it may contain” or the “weight of an empty transport vehicle, without the load”.

In other words, the tare functionality on your scale or digital display helps you determine the exact weight of items or goods – without the extra weight of packages or trucks that transport them.

To use this function, you can weigh the package or vehicle or enter the information into your weighing equipment system. After that, the data will be stored and, when weighing the goods, using the tare, you will obtain the net weight (that is, the result of subtracting the tare from the gross weight).

But here are examples of how this translates into practice:

•    In a retail business
The concern with sustainability is increasingly a trend. Therefore, there are also more and more bulk retail businesses that use reusable containers.

And, in these contexts, the tare function becomes essential.

With this functionality on the digital scale, such as our BM5 ARM with the Zero Waste module, the weight of the used packages can be automatically discounted, without wasting time, allowing customers to pay only for what they take.

•    In an industrial business
Weighing plays a very important role in logistics and transport and, of course, also in the effective management of a business in the industrial area.

And the tare functionality makes the daily life of this type of business easier.

With this functionality, it’s possible, for example, to use a pallet scale and weigh the goods together with the pallet without having to do any math. Simply use tare to automatically remove the weight from the pallet and immediately obtain the weight of the items.

Therefore, tare is a very useful function of your scale or digital display, making the weighing process much more fluid and accurate.

If you have any questions about this or if you would like to purchase weighing equipment with this functionality, please contact us. At Balanças Marques, we are always available for you!
